Volvo is currently developing a plug-in hybrid bus that it says can go the distance silently and emissions-free. Three of the rapid-charge capable, plug-in buses will be ready for testing in Gothenburg, Sweden by fall of 2012.

Having sold more than 250 hybrid buses, Volvo boldly claims it has developed the "world's most efficient hybrid solution for buses and trucks," but the Swedish coachmaker isn't stopping there. By equipping its hybrid buses for plug-in duty, Volvo says that fuel consumption will drop by a remarkable 75 percent compared to conventional diesel-burning coaches. Volvo Buses chief executive officer, HÃ¥kan Karlsson, says:

Reducing the total global energy consumption is the most important measure today and in the future. The bus is already today clearly the most energy-efficient vehicle for public transport and our hybrid bus will accentuate its position as the best environmental option. But, we must continue to reduce energy consumption and for us in the bus industry, this involves finding solutions to increase electricity use.

Volvo's plug-in hybrid concept bus works on the concept of end-of-route charging, which means that charging stations are installed at bus line terminals. By charging the battery pack there for five to ten minutes, Volvo says the bus could operate fuel-free for up to ten kilometers (6.2 miles). Volvo says more stations could be installed in densely populated urban centers to eliminate the need to burn any fuel in heavily polluted areas.

Volvo expects to have one prototype bus ready for limited testing in late 2011. The next step comes in the fall of 2012, when three buses will ferry passengers around Gothenburg. Karlsson says, "it will take a few more years" to ready the plug-in hybrid bus for production.
