Dodge Ram 1500 PHEV



On August 2, Chrysler handed over the keys to 14 plug-in hybrid Dodge Ram 1500 to the city of San Francisco as part of a three-year evaluation program. Fourteen also went to Sacramento. The cities will evaluate the vehicles by driving them and regularly reporting all driving and charging experiences with the loaned demonstration vehicles to Chrysler.



The heavy-hauling PHEVs use Electrovaya's 12-kWh lithium ion 'SuperPolymer' battery system that provides enough juice to move the light-duty truck for up to 20 miles in electric-only mode. Additionally, the plug-in Ram comes packing a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 gasoline engine, a two-mode hybrid transmission and a 6.6-kilowatt on-board charger.



Chrysler, along with Electrovaya, will build a test fleet of 140 PHEV Ram thanks, in part, to a $48-million grant from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act DOE Vehicle Electrification Program and a $5-million grant from the Canadian government. The Ram plug-in project is a $97.4-million effort that will soon expand to another ten locations. Earlier this year, Chrysler sent 10 PHEV Rams to Yuma, AZ and Clark County, NV.
