Japanese automaker Nissan has reportedly submitted a proposal to Tennessee's government officials seeking approval for the installation of a 300-square-foot solar-powered charging station at the automaker's U.S. headquarters in Franklin. The proposed facility would use the sun's powerful rays to charge up to 18 plug-in vehicles - say, to name one random example - the Nissan Leaf, simultaneously.

Assuming Nissan's project gets final approval from city planners, the solar charging station could be fully operational by September of this year. For the time being, the chargers would only be available for use by Nissan employees but, John Harris, director of facilities, environmental and systems engineering at Nissan North America, explains that:

Ultimately, there will be a way that the public can use it. We don't want to have our toys and not share them, if you will.

While this would be Nissan's first solar-powered charging site in the U.S., similar facilities like Outpost Solar's 20kW charging station in Pulaski, TN have been operational for quite some time.
