The Mercedes-Benz Atego BlueTec's innovative, fuel-saving hybrid drive system has earned it the 2010 German Sustainability Award. The BlueTec Hybrid model is based on the Euro 5-compliant Atego 1222 L, a vehicle that already meets the stringent EEV standards for emissions. The BlueTec combines a lithium-ion battery pack with a lightweight four-cylinder diesel engine that cranks out 218 horsepower and a water-cooled electric motor that adds another 59 hp to the mix. The complete package cuts fuel consumption and emissions by 15 percent compared to its non-hybrid counterpart.

A panel of jurors voting issued this statement outlining the selection of the Atego BlueTec Hybrid as the overall champ:

Daimler's Mercedes-Benz Atego BlueTec Hybrid addresses various challenges to sustainability. The adjustment of hybrid components to the vehicle operating strategy reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by between ten and 15 percent-and the savings can even be higher, depending on topography and operating conditions. When the vehicle is braking or coasting, the electric motor serves as a generator that feeds energy into the lithium-ion batteries, which are subsequently available for handling special load situations. The Mercedes-Benz Atego BlueTec Hybrid is therefore an environmentally friendly vehicle with which Daimler is setting benchmarks worldwide.
